PROGRAMS & LUNCHEONS

Each year the West Suburban Art Society provides members with inspiring art programs combined with luncheons. The venue for the 2024-25 season will be The Carlisle in Lombard, IL. We will also have a program at the College of DuPage and visit the Mayslake Peabody Estate in April of 2025.

Members should keep an eye out for registration information sent by email about three weeks before these events. They require reservations and a separate fee.

From Fedoras to Fascinators - A Delightful Parade Through the History of Ladies Hats
Presented by: Ellie Carlson

For centuries women have adorned their heads and framed their faces with hats that showcase their personalities and finest attributes. Ellie will demonstrate the novel ways women have sported hats over the years. Historic hats will be on display and attendees are welcome to adorn themselves with their own hats (or fascinators) for a festive atmosphere. Member registration is required. Registration deadline is August 28th.

Call for volunteers: Help Make Our Gatherings Special

As a volunteer-led organization, we rely on the support of our members to create a welcoming and enjoyable experience at each of our gatherings. We’re currently seeking 3-4 volunteers to assist at our check-in table. Responsibilities include passing out name tags and greeting members and guests as they arrive.

Holiday Luncheon Performance by Global Spanish Guitar Ensemble

Global Spanish Guitar Performance

Music and dance from Spain, Cuba, and other global destinations will feature artists: Leticia Aravena from Argentina (flamenco dance and vocals) along with Carlo Basile (Spanish guitar), Fran Banish (steel string guitar), and Bob Garrett (percussion). The ensemble will perform a diverse and energetic set as well as give descriptions of the musical pieces and dance elements. Member registration is required.

Barbie: The History of America’s Most Famous Doll

No other doll has been so played with, analyzed, collected, criticized, and loved. In this illustrated lecture, Goddard delves into the history of Barbie and her inventor, the passionately creative and intensely competitive Ruth Handler. Learn what inspired the development of Barbie in 1959, how Barbie helped turn Mattel into one of the world’s most successful toy companies, and what Barbie’s impact has been on American culture. Celebrate the myths and history of Rome with sculptures from the Torlonia Collection. The program includes a discussion plus a musical performance by an outstanding ensemble.

In 1919, Francis Stuyvesant Peabody commissioned renowned Chicago architect Benjamin Marshall to design the Tudor Revival-style mansion. Today it is a thriving community space, where people connect to nature and art. The Portiuncula Chapel is a replica of the original structure in Assisi, Italty.
